Thomas Street in Northern Quarter, Manchester has become the fashion stage of the moment, as Chanel presented their Métiers d’Art collection to the world. 600+ guests including notable fashion legends such as Alexa Chung, Kate Moss and Anna Wintour sat in the rainy front row, set amongst shops including a massage parlour and a tattoo shop.

The Collection

The brands signature tweed was in full force, with elements of Manchester’s aesthetic trickling its way through the collection in the form of leather looks, black lace and shell jackets. Cashmere scarves, skirts and sweaters imprinted with Manchester iconography were the most unique element to the show, and no doubt will become a collector’s item to Mancunians.

Why is Chanel presenting their show in Manchester?

Taking to their Instagram, Chanel detailed Manchester as being “one of the most effervescent cities and an avant-garde one, whose brands, spanning all genres, have changed the history of music.”

This decision is no doubt a nod to Manchester’s notorious and profound history in textiles and manufacturing. The brand also has past links to the city that could hint as to why Manchester became their stage of choice. Coco Chanel’s decade long affair with the Duke of Westminster involved frequent visits to the northern city, with the racecourse and Eaton Hall in Cheshire being favoured locations of the couple.

Manchester’s presence in the world of media has been ever growing over the past few years, and housing one of the most notable fashion brands in the world has the potential to firmly put the city on the map of the fashion world.
